Connecting Agri & Food collaborates with software companies to develop ICT based applications for precision livestock farming. Our focus is on converting big data to the right information, to take the right action.
Projects based on Smart Farming
Smart Stable (www.slimmestal.nl) is an online monitoring system based on real-time data from livestock farms, developed in collaboration with software company Whysor. The focus of the monitoring is on the climate within stables, the smell around stables and the water consumption of animals. With Smart Stable, livestock farmers will be provided with the opportunity to make timely adjustments aided by notifications of deviating measurement values. To automatically convert big data into well-organised text messages, we collaborate with Eindhoven's Technical College, which developed this technology for ICT applications in human health care. With the project "To Measure is To Know" (see below) we investigated the application of Smart Stable in pig farming. Read more about Smart Stable
The BEL AIR project aims to reduce endotoxin emissions in and around poultry farms using innovative technologies. In the first phase we want to better understand the source and the formation of endotoxins in the stable with the aid of coupled sensors. Based on this, a monitoring or analysis tool is being developed, the Endotoxin Dashboard. The dashboard can control the production cycle, to recognise critical situations as early as possible and then to exercise control with the purpose of reducing endotoxin emissions. See the GIQS platform for further information
Food protects - Interreg
Food Protects is a project with a duration of four years (2017-2020) that we conduct together with 17 partners from the German-Dutch border area. Within Food Protects we are developing technology for pig and poultry farming, aimed at an integrated approach to environmental quality. This means that it is not only focused on ammonia, but also on smells, fine dust and germs. With the development of real-time systems based on the Internet of Things, which is called Internet-of-Pigs, entrepreneurs are getting the opportunity to make timely adjustments and avoid unnecessarily high concentrations. For further information see also the website on Food Protects.
Big data and animal recognition
We are converting the available big data in pig farming into practical applications on the pig farm and in the chain. Based on data from trial farms that use ear tags with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), the available data is visualised and analysed in an integrated manner. All this is translated into a blueprint for practical applications, which can be used to make sustainability improvements at both business and chain level. This involves collaborating with TU/e and with private chain parties. The project is receiving financial support from the Steering Committee Agricultural Innovation Brabant (LIB).
To Measure is To Know
Connecting Agri & Food is collaborating with suppliers' association Good Farming Star and meat producer Vion on the use of Smart Stable, a modern ICT tool we developed, aimed at business adjustments that can be realised in the short term without major investments. The purpose of To Measure is To Know is to turn the application of Smart Stable into tangible reality at 22 pig farms, providing the pig farmer insight into the stable climate at the farm. Parameters that are continuously measured in real time are temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 and NH3 content. We are also examining whether it is useful to share information between successive links in a chain.

Feasibility study TTAG apps
On behalf of the Meat Your Own foundation, an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, we detailed how the TTAG, as a modern ICT application, can contribute to a meeting point for meat producers and consumers.
Apps for consumers
Connecting Agri & Food teaches young people to design apps themselves, such as the pig game for primary school students. Young people have designed these themselves on the Android platform. This way we provide in a modern and appealing way an alternative to the current, often outdated teaching material about the farm that is available at primary schools.
The farmer @pp
The app "The farmer @pp' from the retail organisation Agrimarkt helps customers to do their shopping and connects them with regional producers. Download the app here. Click here for the customer experience with Connecting Agri & Food of Wilfred van Elzakker, Commercial Director Agrimarket
An app for convenient shopping was developed for customers of Plus supermarket entrepreneur Benders in Venlo and Blerick. Download the Benders app via the App Store.
